Harding High School in Bridgeport will be open today after a plumbing leak flooded part of the building and forced it to close unexpectedly.

According to Assistant Superintendent John Lischner, the maintenance staff got to the school around 6 a.m. to find a plumbing leak from a toilet on the second floor.

Lischner says the leak was due to an issue with an automatic flusher on a toilet, which caused water to seep through the ceilings and affect six classrooms and a teacher work area.

The decision to cancel school for the day came around 7 a.m.

"I'd like to thank our parents and students during this situation these time are always difficult, uncertainty, but we have great parents and students and staff, very flexible, who make this unforeseen events a little easier to get through,” says Lischner.

School officials say no students were in the building, just maintenance and security staff.

Servpro, an outside cleaning company, was on site working to dry out the waterlogged areas.

According to officials, the building is expected to be replaced next year.

Officials say construction is underway on a new Harding High School at Boston Avenue and Bond Street.
