Holmdel community mourns loss of HS lacrosse player
The Holmdel community is mourning the loss of a high school lacrosse player.
School Superintendent Robert McGarry sent a letter to parents saying Holmdel High School student Jack Dowd died suddenly Sunday.
“The Dowd family has asked that I share this news with you and ask that you respect their privacy at this extremely challenging time,” McGarry said in the letter.
The letter did not provide any details about how Dowd died, but it was believed that he suffered some sort of medical episode.
Dowd had just started his junior year and played long-stick midfielder on the school lacrosse team, according to the website Maxpreps.com.
“Last night the Holmdel Lacrosse Community was shattered by the loss of one of our brothers. Condolences to the Dowd family. Rest in peace our #9,” the Holmdel High School Boys Lacrosse team posted on the team’s Facebook page.
Grief counselors were provided at the school.
The teen’s father, Sean Dowd, is a teacher at Holmdel High School.
