Hospital officials say a Sacred Heart University student has died after being struck by a car yesterday.

The incident happened Friday just before 1 p.m. On the 3,000 block of Madison Avenue in Bridgeport. Police identified the victim as Kaitlyn Doorhy, who was set to be a junior this year. Doorhy, who was from New York, was hit by a red Nissan while walking with a friend.

Police say the 20-year-old was initially taken to Saint Vincent's Medical Center in critical condition.

Police had announced Saturday morning that Doorhy had died, but then later retracted the information and said she remained in critical condition. Later Saturday afternoon, St. Vincent's Medical Center put out a statement confirming the girl died.

"This morning the parents of Kaitlyn Doorhy gave permission for St. Vincent's Medical Center to confirm that their daughter had died from injuries she sustained on Friday afternoon," the hospital said in a statement. "Her parents have agreed that her organs would be donated for transplant. Mr. Doorhy said, 'Kaitlyn is an organ donor and will help save the lives of others.'"

The president of Sacred Heart University also posted a message on the school's website confirming Doorhy's death and offering condolences to the community.

Police say the driver stayed at the scene of the accident and will be questioned.

The mother of one of Doorhy's sorority sisters tells News 12 that she was struck while on her way to campus to help freshmen move into their dorms.
