(AP) - The co-chairman of a key legislativecommittee says the Connecticut House may take up a bill this weekto replace the state's death penalty with a life sentence withoutchance of parole. The House is scheduled to meet Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Rep. Michael Lawlor, from the Judiciary Committee, says hedoesn't expect the legislation to become law this year. But he saysthere's growing support. The bill would apply to those who commit certain capital felonymurders, such as killing a police officer. It would apply only tocrimes committed after the bill becomes law and would not affectthose now on death row. Gov. M. Jodi Rell says she still supports the death penalty forespecially heinous crimes.
