Illegal grease dumping in Orange clogs sewer systems
Police in Orange say someone has been clogging up the sewer system by illegally dumping grease into manholes.
Investigators say they believe that a company has been hired to clean out restaurant grease traps, but is emptying truckloads of waste into manholes along Boston Post Road to avoid paying disposal fees.
For months, the grease has seeped into the sewer and forced the town to pay for cleanup, police say.
Authorities say they believe the dumping occurs somewhere between 500 Boston Post Road and the West Haven border to the east, but that stretch contains hundreds of possible sites.
Water Pollution Control Authority administrator R. Scott Allen says that the problem first appeared in the spring of last year. He says that the dumping appears to take place mostly on Tuesday, Wednesdays and Thursdays, but it is unknown if it's during the day or night.
Anyone who has seen tanker-style trucks parked along commercial properties in the vicinity is asked to contact police.
