A Jersey City man is facing charges after allegedly scamming a Maine couple out of thousands of dollars.
Police say that Eliezer Velasquez called the couple twice, posing as their grandson. He allegedly asked the couple to send him $8,500 for bail money through FedEx. He told them to send the money to a vacant home in Clifton, according to police.
Clifton police say that they started to investigate after a third attempt to get money from the couple.
Police say that this is a popular scam in the tri-state area. They remind the public to never pay someone through FedEx, wire transfer or on a prepaid credit card.
