Two Jet Skis collided in Milford, killing a recent Shelton High School graduate Tuesday evening.
A 911 call sent Milford fire crews to Cedar Beach off Milford Point Road.
Fire officials responding to the scene say CPR was being performed on the victim identified as 18-year-old Matthew Horvath.
Horvath was taken to Bridgeport Hospital by emergency responders, where he died due to his injuries.
The teenager graduated from Shelton High School in June.
The principal recalls him being "well-liked, a hard worker, and a member of the varsity soccer team."
School officials organized a memorial gathering at the school Wednesday afternoon to allow the community to celebrate Horvath’s life.
Principal Kathy Riddie issued a statement saying in part, “Our school crisis team conveyed and offered a school community gathering yesterday afternoon. It provided our students and their families a safe space to grieve and support one another. It was evident from the crowd of students, parents, and staff that Matt left an impact on all of us and will certainly be missed.”
The principal also offered thoughts and support to the Horvath family.
Friends of the 18-year-old athlete started a GoFundMe page for his family that quickly surpassed $50,000.
Investigators are looking into how and why the crash occurred. Department of Energy and Environmental Protection police are handling the case.
