State lawmakers discussed ways to reform the parole system Thursday following July?s deadly Cheshire home burglary.

Both suspects in the home invasion, which ended in the murder of a mother and two daughters, were out on parole for burglary charges at the time of the killings.

Senate and House Republicans want to hold a special session in order to pass a three-strikes law. That measure would send offenders who commit three violent crimes to prison for life. They also want burglary classified as a violent crime and are calling for more oversight of the parole system.

Connecticut?s victim advocate and leading Senate Democrats want to replace the current part-time parole board with full-time professionals.

?We know it's not an exact science in evaluating offender records, but shouldn't we demand that the folks doing that have as much expertise as possible?? state Sen. Donald E. Williams, Jr. (D-Brooklyn) said.

The Legislature's Judiciary Committee will hold an informational hearing on sentencing and parole September 11. The hearing will involve both state and national experts.
