A high school math teacher who also works with a community theater was arrested after he allegedly masturbated in front of a 15-year-old youth theater group member, according to police.
Northport police say 35-year-old Robert J. Miller, of Northport, was arrested on charges of public lewdness and endangering the welfare of a child following the alleged incident Friday. Miller works as a math teacher at Smithtown West High School and also serves as a technical director with the Northport Community Theater.
Police say Miller asked a 15-year-old female youth theater group to go outside with him "to assist him in checking on a motor issue" with his car. He allegedly told the girl to sit in the car and rev the engine, then told her to take off a shoe and sock so she could "feel the vibration of the gas pedal."
Police say the teen then noticed that Miller was masturbating while standing next to the driver's side door behind her. He allegedly told the girl to look forward and watch the dashboard gauges.
Police say the girl returned to the school building. Police were notified and Miller was arrested.
He was arraigned in Northport Village Justice Court and was released on $2,000 cash bail.
Northport police say they notified the director of the Northport Community Theater and the Smithtown School District of the arrest.
Investigators say there may be other victims who were subjected to similar behavior by Miller. Any potential victims in the Northport area are urged to contact Northport Police Department detectives at 631-261-7500. Anyone in the Smithtown area who believes they may be a victim is urged to call Suffolk County Police Department's Fourth Precinct Detective Squad at 631-854-8452.
