A Milford teenager was sentenced to 25 years in prison Monday for the murder of a high school classmate who prosecutors say turned down his prom invitation.

As News 12 reported, Christopher Plaskon pleaded no contest to stabbing Maren Sanchez, 16, to death at Jonathan Law High School on the day of their junior prom in April 2014.

The judge called Sanchez's murder a brutal crime that cannot be sugar-coated and told Plaskon, now 19 years old, he has a lot to make up for.

Sanchez's father addressed the court and said he was appalled by the 25-year sentence, especially because Connecticut's parole laws state that for a juvenile crime, Plaskon would be eligible for parole after serving 15 years.

Since he's been incarcerated for two years already, that means Plaskon would go before the parole board in 13 years.

Plaskon chose not to speak during his sentencing hearing.

Plaskon's attorney says the teen was psychotic back in 2014 when the stabbing occurred. He adds that had the case gone to trial then, he would've gone for an insanity defense.

The State's Attorney says Plaskon knew exactly what he was doing and killed Sanchez because she turned down his prom invitation.

Sanchez's family has also filed a civil suit against the Milford Board of Education, as well as Plaskon and his parents.

It claims Maren Sanchez warned school officials that Plaskon was emotionally disturbed and could be dangerous to himself or others.
