Missing Westport boy is found safe in NYC
A 2-year-old Westport boy who went missing turned up safe at a relative's home in New York City, police say.
Authorities have not located an uncle, Danny Frazier, who they say brought the boy, Messiah Frazier, to the Manhattan home of a female relative.
Police say Messiah is nonverbal and may have medical issues, which lent a sense of concern to the search when they learned he was last seen with the uncle, who police say is a convicted felon and drug addict.
The child was not harmed and is now in the care of police, who issued a Silver Alert during the search. They say they did not issue the more serious Amber Alert because they did not think Frazier would hurt his nephew -- they just deemed him unfit to take care of the child.
Law enforcement agents from multiple local police departments, the United States Marshals Service and the FBI joined the search.
Lt. David Farrell says Westport police initially got a call that Messiah had gone missing from an apartment on 1655 Post Road East, where he lived with his grandmother. Investigators determined the uncle took him from there after the grandmother died Thursday.
"We know he went to a barber shop in Norwalk [and] a bank in Norwalk, where we believe he did acquire some money," Farrell says. "With his history of drug abuse...he could be in possession of weapons."
Police say the Manhattan woman at whose house they found Messiah was not aware that anything was wrong.
They say Frazier could face charges of risk of injury to a child or not cooperating with police.
