Those who headed to the post office Monday braced themselves for what is known as one of the busiest mailing days of the year.
The U.S. Postal Service expected to process more than 640 million pieces of mail, ranging from cards to letters to packages. Officials believe more packages and cards will be delivered than last year.
Closer to home, the Norwalk postmaster anticipated to see at least 500 customers come through the Washington Street Branch. More than 80 carriers were out on local streets and extra staff was on hand to keep things running smoothly indoors.
Dec. 20 is the Postal Service's domestic deadline to send cards and packages to ensure that they get to their destination by Christmas; Dec. 23 is the deadline for sending domestic packages through priority mail.
The Postal Service is delivering mail seven days a week during the holiday season to major cities and high-volume areas.
