A mansion in Norwalk is offering patrons this Halloween an unusual glimpse into the mystery of what lies beneath the floorboards of the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion.

The mansion's museum will be granting patrons entrance Sunday into the historic home's rarely seen basement. The mansion was finished in 1867 for Langrand Lockwood but was soon sold to the Mathews family in 1872. The museum provides a snapshot of what life was like for the super rich.

In the basement sits a two-lane bowling alley and a wine cellar. There's also a bread oven created for the original basement kitchen and a vault made of giant chunks of granite.

"It's a wonderful space and I think it's probably a major part of the future use of this museum for the public," said museum board member Port Draper.
