Boy Scout Troop 45 has its first Eagle Scout since the 1980s. The group honored Matthew Fleming Tuesday, a 17-year-old from Stamford who wanted to become an Eagle Scout since he was 11 years old.
Fleming's project was cleaning and renovating the soldiers and sailor's monument in Stamford.
"I think it's like finding your own journey. When I was younger, I was obsessed with stories, starting an adventure, finishing it. This was my own adventure," said Fleming.
Fleming's progress could have been derailed when his troop in Stamford shut down. Troop 45 in New Canaan died out in the 1980s, but was reborn a few years ago, allowing Fleming to complete his Eagle project.
The Stamford High School student says he is planning on joining the Air Force after he graduates.
