School officials and police have decided to add full-time police officers to lower grade level schools in New Fairfield for the remainder of the year.
In a community forum held Monday night, police, the Board of Education and the finance board said they will look at next year's budget and see how it can be adjusted to include long-term security.
Officials say since last month's deadly school shooting in Parkland, Florida, parents have been outspoken about making local schools safer.
The purpose of Monday night's meeting was to further open the conversation and hear suggestions.
"After a while you say, 'OK, we need to be doing something more than what we're doing and we need to limit some of the access to our buildings,'" says Board of Education member Peggy Katkocin.
The high school and middle school, which share a campus, have one full-time resource officer. Parents are hoping to see that expand to the lower grade level schools.
