New Haven police: Baby girl found in dumpster outside apartment building

A baby was found in a dumpster by maintenance workers outside of a Newhallville apartment building, New Haven police say.

A baby girl was found in a dumpster by maintenance workers outside of a Newhallville apartment building, New Haven police say.
Officers responded to Presidential Gardens at 573 Dixwell Ave. around 2 p.m.
Police say EMS was called to the scene. The 8-month-old girl remains hospitalized and is being treated for burns to both hands.
The woman, who is not the child's mother, was detained at New Haven Police headquarters. Criminal charges are pending against the 24-year-old Hamden woman for abandoning the baby.
Detectives say the Hamden woman put the baby in the dumpster but have not yet determined who is responsible for the baby's injuries.
The child's mother has been in contact with police.
