Bridgeport officials celebrated a new, sustainable energy source for one local neighborhood.
NuPower cut the ribbon on the new fuel cell at the Cherry Street Lofts property on Tuesday.
The company said the fuel cell will provide power to the 174 nearby apartments and a 70,000-square foot school.
"Not only is it quiet: It has essentially zero emissions. The carbon footprint is very, very small. This is the technology of the future, here today. And it's also a perfect application of reliability and environmental sensitivity great for urban locations. You couldn't do this with conventional technology," said Daniel Donovan, manager of NuPower LLC.
The fuel cell runs on natural gas, splitting it into hydrogen and oxygen components and emitting water as its byproduct.
