A swim school is coming to Westport Avenue in Norwalk with a goal of teaching young children how to float and swim.
News 12 Connecticut got an inside look at the Stewie the Duck Swim School on Monday.
Laurie Houseknecht will be overseeing the swim school. She is originally from Norwalk and has a long-standing link to aquatics.
"I swam [Division I] at Central Connecticut State University, and then started as a lifeguard at Compo Beach in Westport...athletic aquatic program director for many years," said Houseknecht.
Her mission is to teach little ones how to float – a skill that houseknecht says they will take with them for the rest of their lives.
Stew Leonard Jr. and his family have been strong advocates on the importance of learning to swim and float after they lost their young son in a drowning accident nearly 36 years ago.
"If he could have learned one simple introductory skill, roll over on your back and float, it would have been a game changer, and we want to teach that here," said Leonard Jr., president of the swim school.
All profits made at the school will go toward providing 10,000 free swimming lessons.
A grand opening is planned for June 1 and open houses will be held on June 3 and June 4. Kids are expected to hit the water June 5.
