Newtown crews say they have already filled several thousand potholes in town after the winter weather damaged some roads.
Public Works Director Fred Hurley says the town has gone through tons of extra patch this year, which Hurley attributes to the large number of freeze-thaw cycles this winter and spring.
"We had some bitter cold early on in the season," Hurley says. "We had some snow. We didn't have big snow events, but you had a lot of events, a lot of little events, where storm systems came in and left. And every time you had that kind of freeze-thaw cycle, it created another issue."
Hurley says this year's pothole patching has not caused budget problems so far. He does say that crews could use up all the patch material, putting discretionary paving projects set for late spring on hold until July.
