A North Haven firefighter died Monday after battling a fire at a multifamily home on Quinnipiac Avenue.

A procession was held Tuesday to honor Matthias Wirtz.

Officials say the 46-year-old, who was a 22-year veteran of the department, became distressed while fighting the fire. He was taken to the hospital where he died. An official cause of death was not immediately clear.

Fire officials say all residents of the home were able to escape.
