Norwalk police are considering the purchase of an innovative system designed to pinpoint the location of gunshots.

They say the system, Shot Spotter, would allow them to better investigate cases.

Norwalk Police Chief Harry Rilling, who met Wednesday morning with Shot Spotter representatives, says he wants to reduce the number of shots fired in Norwalk and get a better handle on where guns are being fired.

Rilling received a demo of the system at police headquarters.

The Shot Spotter system uses sensors placed strategically throughout a city. When a gunshot is fired, it pinpoints the location within a few feet and notifies dispatch so officers can respond.

Representatives for the company say people do not always call to report gunfire, and when they do, they're not always accurate in saying where it was.

Shot Spotter is being used in 30 cities across the country and will be installed in New Haven.

Rilling says his department is still in the early stages of looking at the system.
