Lawmakers and pharmaceutical companies are trying to raise awareness and crack down on counterfeit prescription drugs with a federal investigation hitting close to home in southwestern Connecticut.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) inspected some of the counterfeit medication today at a U.S. post office in Milford, where officials say these pills have come in.

Former FBI agent Brian Donnelly, who now works security for Pfizer, says the fake meds are entering the country through the mail, from online pharmacies in foreign countries.

Donnelly says Lipitor, Celebrex and Viagra are among the most common counterfeits entering the region.

Authorities say the fake meds have killed six people in Canada and many more overseas. Blumenthal is seeking steeper penalties for drug counterfeiters.
