Officials report that illegal dumping is now being blamed for a sewage spill in Stamford Harbor.

The spill happened yesterday in the area of Harbor Drive.

Stamford Mayor Mike Pavia says contrary to some reports, state investigators have concluded the sewage did not come from some kind of massive spill. He says they believe the operator of a sewage truck may have illegally dumped a 100- or 200-gallon load into a storm drain by removing a manhole cover.

Environmental officials ordered a temporary ban on fishing in the area while they investigate.

As authorities investigate, Pavia is warning the public that illegally dumping sewage into a public harbor is a federal offense.
