Parents in Milford are demanding changes to what they say is a dangerous and hectic drop off and pickup zone at a local school.
Kids are picked up in a tight, crowded area at Live Oak Elementary School, according to parents. They say there is little room, if any, for children to walk, creating a potentially dangerous situation.
"There have been some fender benders of parents trying to pull in or back up into a spot because they know backing out, you can't see kids," says Genilla Corkery, a concerned parent. "So they back into a parking spot cause they fear they are going to accidentally run over a child."
Sara Cobie, a parent of a former student, says someone ran over her daughter's foot two years ago when the driver was trying to leave the parking lot.
"The time has to be now," she said. "Because it's not just going to be a foot getting run over. It's going to be an actual child being run over. We have preschoolers here. There are 2- and 3-year-olds. Someone is going to get seriously hurt."
Parents say they want sidewalks or walkways for children, something they've been asking for for years.
Jeffrey Neilsen, the school safety and security coordinator for Milford Public Schools, said they received one complaint from a parent last week and are already working on both short- and long-term plans.
"The safety of our students and their families is the top priority for Milford Public Schools," he said.
The first step they're taking is hiring an independent traffic security expert to look at what is in place and "if there's any changes that can address the concern of this parent and provide a safer environment for anybody."
That information will be analyzed, he said, and changes would come if need be.
