High school students across southwestern Connecticut may soon have a new required course if lawmakers get their way.

The state is looking to require all high school students to take a money management class in addition to math, science and English. At Wilton High School, students can take personal finance as an elective but it's not required.

Connecticut received a failing grade from different national studies on preparing kids to manage their finances. State officials say only 7 percent of schools require kids to take a personal finance class.

The General Assembly's Education Committee voted in favor of the requirement starting next school year. The bill still has to pass in the full General Assembly before it can be implemented.
