Police in New Canaan are telling the public to be on the lookout for threats and fake calls from criminals posing as the authorities.
Allison Lloyds says she received a convincing voicemail from a person posing as a real detective from the New Canaan Police Department phone number.
The scammer, Lloyds says, had her Social Security number, home address, even her medical license number, and said she owed $5,000 for a missed court appearance.
"My line of work, I'm a therapist, so sometimes I do have to appear in court to give a professional opinion," she says.
After 45 minutes, Lloyds says she realized something wasn't right. But when she hung up the phone, the scammer called back, threatening her.
She says she's sharing her story because she doesn't want anyone else to fall victim.
New Canaan police say anyone receiving these kinds of phone calls should hang up immediately and ignore any threats or requests for money.
"If I had had the knowledge that this was going on, I would have been better prepared, I was really caught off guard," Lloyds says.
She also says she contacted some of her colleagues in case scammers were specifically targeting mental health professionals.
