Police are looking for the truck driver that nearly took the life of an elderly woman as she was trying to cross the intersection at East Gun Hill Road and Dekalb Avenue Thursday.

Anna Rogavin, 91, had both her legs severed when a tractor-trailer ran a red light. The driver took off after the incident. Rogavin was taken to the hospital after the hit-and-run and is still listed in critical condition.

Friends say the 4-foot-8-inch woman was on her way to the Montefiore Senior Center for a lunch date. People that know her say the woman's independence is what compromised her safety.

Some residents are calling for stricter police enforcement when it comes to road safety violations. According to residents, drivers often come barreling down the two roads with little regard for pedestrians.

However, traffic department officials say there hasn't been an accident at the location in the past five years. The intersection is not listed under the Safe Streets for Senior Initiative which extends the length of crossing lights for elderly pedestrians.
