Redding police say they arrested an 18-year-old Wednesday in connection with an accident that seriously injured six teenagers in April.
They say Ryan Capozziello, of Fairfield, was arraigned for driving while intoxicated, reckless driving and assault with a motor vehicle.
According to police, Capozziello and five friends left a party in Redding to go to a gas station. While on their way back, police say the teens' Jeep Liberty SUV flew out of control on Route 107 and crashed on Redding Road near Umpawaug Road.
Officials say the car went off the roadway, rolled over and hit two trees before stopping and catching fire. They say the impact ejected two teens from the vehicle, and passing drivers pulled the other four from the burning vehicle.
A witness told investigators that Capozziello hit the curve in the road "in excess of 50 miles per hour." Police say one of the passengers told them that Capozziello suddenly sped up to 70 or 80 mph before the crash. The speed limit was 35 mph.
Authorities say Capozziello told them he had five beers before getting behind the wheel.
All six teens, including Capozziello, were hospitalized with serious injuries ranging from broken bones, burns and a brain injury. All of them survived, but are still recovering.
Capoziello's attorney had no comment following court except to say, "things aren't always what they seem, and in time, everything will play out."
Capozziello was released on $50,000 bond and will appear in Danbury court at a later date. He has no prior record.
