A woman from Suffolk who's a big fan of felines has done something important to help her furry friends and her community: opening a cat cafe in downtown Sayville.
The Shabby Tabby Cat Cafe, located at 249 West Main St., offers much more than just a quick caffeine fix. You can mingle with felines that are up for adoption.
Owner Ryan Shea decided to open Long Island's first cat cafe after losing her cat in December.
"I went into the cat rescue world and I just learned about homeless cats and how cats really need homes," she says. "Throughout the year I've come across a couple of cat cafes in the city. I went to a few and went to one in Colorado and I just thought we really needed one on Long Island."
All of the cats come from the Golden Paw Society, a cat rescue group in Huntington.
Spending time at the cafe costs $15 an hour for adults and $10 for kids 13 years or younger.
Shea says she hopes the cafe allows homeless cats to find their "fur-ever" homes.
