Five corrections officers were found guilty Tuesday in the 2012 beating of Rikers Island inmate Jamal Lightfoot.

Each of the officers was convicted of first-degree attempted gang assault, first-degree attempted assault, second-degree assault, first-degree falsifying business records and first-degree offering a false instrument for filing and official misconduct.

They face up to 15 years in prison on the top count.

The battle to clean up corruption at Rikers Island has been led by Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark, who believes the verdict sent a clear message.

"I think the jury spoke loud and clear today that that type of behavior and conduct is not to be tolerated and justice was served," he said.

The corrections officers, who are still employed by the Department of Corrections, will be terminated.

"I'm just happy justice has been served at the end of the day," Lightfoot said. "Even though they are found guilty, I am hurting inside."

Lightfoot said he hopes what happened to him doesn't happen to anyone else.

The five corrections officers are scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 6.
