Nurses in southwestern Connecticut are tracking seniors who have no air conditioning and plan to check on their well being Tuesday and Wednesday.
Because seniors don?t fare as well as younger people in heat waves, nurses from The Visiting Nurse and Hospice Care are warning people to check on elderly family and neighbors. The agency started making plans last week in advance of the intense heat wave to place seniors who have no air conditioning with family members who do.
Several local home care agencies say their nurses plan to make extra visits to elderly patients to look for signs of heat stroke and breathing and heart problems. In addition, the nurses will give routine check ups. The nurses say many elderly patients cannot afford air conditioning. They are advising such seniors to stay in cool areas, wear light clothing and drink a lot of fluids.
