St. Joseph's Center in Trumbull, the nursing home where residents have had to be evacuated twice in the past few months, intends to close, according to a spokesperson.

They say while the center has made extensive repairs and upgrades to the facility, it still "requires significant renovations and structural improvements for which we were unable to get the necessary waivers from the State and CMS in order to comply with the required timelines."

The failure to receive the waivers and other factors, including inadequate state Medicaid funding, made it finically impossible for the facility to stay open, the statement said.

The center will close as soon as staff receives the necessary approvals from the state. It's not clear how long that will take.

Staff are also working with the Connecticut State Department of Public Health (DPH) to develop a closing plan and comply with all of their requirements.

On March 5, nearly 200 residents were evacuated following an investigation into the water. DPH later found bacteria that causes Legionnaires' disease.

Less than three months later, on May 16, residents were evacuated because Trumbull fire officials found there were failures in the building's fire life safety system, especially with the smoke dampers.
