What started as a summer job for a Stamford High School senior has turned into his ticket to college.
"To be honest with you, I'm not really sure how I would've been able to pay for college," Steven Lopez said. "We don't come from a wealthy background. My parents just came here from Colombia about 20 years ago."
Lopez is one of five Connecticut seniors recently awarded the Evans Scholarship from the Metropolitan Golf Association's Caddie Scholarship Fund. It's a full housing and tuition college scholarship that's been given out since 1930.
Lopez has been a student caddy at The Country Club of New Canaan for the past three years.
"My parents couldn't have been more proud, I couldn't be happier," Lopez said. "It's a huge weight off of my shoulders knowing that I won't worry about having to take out these student loans and having so much student debt once I'm out of college."
He'll attend Rutgers University in the fall and hopes to pursue a career in finance.
