As floodwaters subsided Tuesday, Stamford residents were left to pick up the pieces.

Several inches of rain brought on by a strong nor'easter Sunday and Monday caused the Rippowam River to rise more than 4 feet above normal. In some areas, like a parking lot on Washington Boulevard, the only evidence left of flooding is a few inches of mud.

For others, expensive goods and property require replacement.

"It's got 36,000 miles on it, the car's like brand new," Roger Borrelli, of VIP Limousine, said about one of his town cars that was under water yesterday. "Now it's a $2 car, it's a total loss."

Officials estimate at the current pace, water levels could return to normal in 24 hours.
