An increasing number of police departments in western Connecticut are now using body cameras, and several have just been approved by the state.

Wilton is one of the police departments that received approval. The town just received a $150,000 grant Wednesday from the State Bond Commission. Half will go to pay for the body cameras it bought in June and half will pay for video storage devices.

The Panasonic Arbitrator 360 camera has been used by Wilton police since mid-July and is linked to each officer's dash cameras.

Wilton police say they have to keep most video in their servers for at least 90 days unless it’s a more serious case.

They say these cameras are a very important tool for them to have.

Other area departments also approved for body cameras Wednesday include Darien, Milford and Orange.

The state's largest city, Bridgeport, still does not have body cams or dash cameras.
