Connecticut Secretary of the State Denise Merrill announced Tuesday she is asking lawmakers to put early voting back on the ballot.

Voters rejected an early voting amendment five years ago. But Connecticut's top elections official thinks it's time to try again.

Thirty eight other states already let people vote early, and New York just approved it yesterday.

Allowing early voting in Connecticut would require an amendment to the state constitution which voters would have to pass.

Residents would be able to vote on the amendment as early as Nov. 2020, but only if 75 percent of state lawmakers approved the amendment. Otherwise, voters wouldn't decide until 2022.
