Five teens are in custody after a stolen SUV crashed with a Westport police cruiser early this morning, investigators say.
Officers were responding to reports of intruders rummaging through unlocked cars near Harbor and Bermuda roads around 5 a.m., according to authorities.
"One of the officers responding came upon a car that was driving at him head-on around a sharp curve," says Westport Police Chief Foti Koskinas. "Impact was made at a relatively high speed. The cars were damaged extensively. And the suspects fled from the car at that point."
Officer Mike Tomanelli, the officer involved in the crash, was treated at a hospital before returning to help track down one of the suspects, the chief says.
Police found the four other suspects within a quarter of a mile from the crash site with the help of neighboring departments and police dogs.
The teens range from 14 to 19 years old.
Koskinas says three of them are tied to a Waterbury group linked to a string of stolen car incidents over the past few months in Fairfield County.
