Storm wreaks havoc on Newtown, closing roads and schools
Severe wind and rain overnight caused power outages at homes across Newtown.
Twenty-nine roads were closed throughout Newtown and about 10% of homes lost power, causing the town to close schools on Friday.
Crews have been working around the clock to clean up debris and restore power to isolated areas. The town said all power was expected to be restored by Friday evening.
Sections of Mile Hill Road and Brushy Hill Road were closed while crews removed tree limbs hanging from power lines.
Newtown Director of Public Works Fred Hurley warned citizens that although the storm is over, tree limbs could continue to fall for at least another half-day.
Hurley also credited EverSource's enhanced tree cutting on 100 miles of road in Newtown as a big reason as to why power is being restored so quickly.
The town says they were lucky no major circuits were affected by the storm.
