A new residence offering affordable housing for special needs and homeless people opened Monday in the Bronx.

Located at 600 E. 181st St. in East Tremont, the Sydelle will provide homes for low-income people, those with special needs and people who are transferring from a homeless shelter. The $40 million project took nearly seven years to complete.

"On any given night, there are 58,000 people sleeping in the city shelter system, and what this building represents is housing for singles and families," said Tony Hannigan, CEO of the Center for Urban Community Service.

Units in the rent-controlled building range from studios to multiroom apartments with on-site support. Tenants will pay 30 percent of their income.
