Officials: Man caught after bringing fake gun inside Stamford mall
Police say a man brought a fake gun into the Stamford Town Center Mall Wednesday evening.
They say the incident occurred around 5 p.m. when two people called saying they spotted 29-year-old Mohamed Boumazzourh with the fake gun outside the mall near the Dunkin' Donuts and Buffalo Wild Wings.
Officials say he then brought it into the mall and was waving it around.
Police say they entered the mall and were able to find Boumazzourh after he was spotted on mall surveillance cameras.
Lt. Diedrich Hohn and another officer say they saw Boumazzourh get on an elevator on the seventh floor and were able to catch him.
"He was tackled into the elevator and the fight was on," Hohn says. "A violent struggle ensued inside the elevator. He kept reaching for the gun underneath him. Myself and another officer had to subdue him several times and ultimately we got the gun away from him."
Boumazzourh was also taken to a hospital to be treated for multiple injuries. Police believe he may be mentally ill.
News 12 is told Boumazzourh is facing multiple charges and is being held on $100,000 bond.
He has a court appearance set for today.
