New Sandy Hook memorial unveiled in Bridgeport
There is a new memorial at St. Margaret's Shrine in Bridgeport to honor the victims of Sandy Hook.
Bishop Frank Caggiano led a dedication ceremony Sunday to honor the victims of the shooting in Newtown on Dec. 14, 2012.
Local political and religious leaders gathered at the shrine to remind everyone to keep the victims' memories alive.
Msgr. Robert Weiss, the pastor in Newtown, had the task of telling Sandy Hook families they had lost a loved one on the day of the shooting.
"It really just shows the genuine goodness of so many people who care and in this world of too much hate and violence right now, these days make the difference," says Msgr. Weiss.
A new mental health bill first introduced in response to the tragic shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School is currently awaiting President Obama's signature.
Part of the bill will set up a $5 million grant program to provide assertive community treatment, which is was officials say is one of the most successful strategies for helping people with serious mental illness.
