Fairfield police officials are defending a car chase that ended in a crash, sending an innocent pregnant woman to the hospital.
Michelle Ortega, nine months pregnant, was inside an SUV when a burglary suspect who police were following drove straight into the car, causing it to flip over. The accident occurred by 140 Dewey St. in Bridgeport at around 5:30 p.m. yesterday.
Police say the suspect, Christopher Bond, had fled after trying to rob an office building nearby. The suspect was a serious risk and that's what led to them to pursue him, police say. Officials say Bond has a long criminal history that includes 28 arrests spanning two decades. Police say Ortega and her baby are OK. Bond is still in the hospital with a concussion and is now facing a long list of charges in both Fairfield and Bridgeport, they say.
