Local scientists have confirmed some creepy, crawly facts about southwestern Connecticut. Ecology officials say the number of spiders has increased in the area due to last year's mild winter. However, they say the boost is healthy to keep mosquito and fly populations under control. Experts say the black widow is the only arachnid native to the state that can harm humans.
