Norwalk police say truckloads of trash were hauled away from beneath a bridge Wednesday after they cleared out a homeless encampment.

Police say they responded to the Stroffolino Bridge after the Health Department started receiving complaints. On Tuesday, officers told the people living under they bridge that they had to leave. They say about a dozen men were living there in dirty, dangerous conditions.

Police came back to the bridge on Wednesday to remove items left behind such as mattresses, clothing and trash.

Some of the men who lived under the bridge say they were there for years.

Officers tell News 12 that they referred the homeless men to community agencies.
