What's Ailing You: Web medical advice
This week's "What's Ailing You" looks at turning to the Internet for medical advice.
It's not unusual to be reading up on symptoms and start to worry about a specific illness or ailment. However, doctors say there's a difference between going to random websites and "doing your homework."
Typing in certain symptoms and scouring random message boards about medical issues can cause a scare. Dr. Sean Peden, of Greenwich-based Orthopedic and Neurosurgery Specialists, says the Internet can serve a positive purpose, but that it's important to go to trusted sources.
Peden says WebMD and websites associated with respected medical organizations and facilities are best. As for other sources, he says read at your own risk.
