Construction begins on New Canaan affordable housing development
State and local officials gathered in New Canaan Wednesday to celebrate the start of construction on dozens of affordable homes in town.
The groundbreaking took place at 11 a.m. Gov. Dannel Malloy and Department of Housing Commissioner Evonne Klein attended the event at Mill Apartments on Millport Avenue.
Officials say there are already 40 affordable housing units at the Mill Apartments, and the new development will add 73 more.
Officials say some of the new units will be added by the end of the year.
Gov. Malloy says he's glad the state could support the program, which was paid for by state and local funds and a private bank loan.
Officials say they're also applying for a grant to help pay for the new units.
