Red Cross issues emergency request for blood donations
Red Cross officials put out an emergency plea Wednesday for blood donations.
A blood drive was hosted by the organization at the Trinity Baptist Church in Fairfield.
Officials say they had more than 50 appointments and some walk-ins as well.
They say because of the Fourth of July holiday, 650 fewer blood drives were scheduled this week compared to an average week.
They also say the supply was already low because donations typically dip in the summer.
Officials say one donation can save up to three lives, and although about 38 percent of Americans can donate, only about 10 percent do so.
The Red Cross says there are blood drives scheduled around southwestern Connecticut in the next few days.
