Hospitals across southwestern Connecticut warned of critical drug shortages in the region Thursday.
Officials at Greenwich Hospital said they were running short on basic, everyday drugs like antibiotics and anesthetics.
Medical experts voiced worry that the problem is worsening. Some have blamed mergers by large-scale drug makers.
"They join and have the same product, so now, instead of having two of that same product, now you have one," said Stacy Vaeth, the pharmacy director at Greenwich Hospital.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal called the shortages "a major problem" and called for a federal investigation into whether pharmaceutical companies are artificially keeping supplies low to drive up prices.
Hospital representatives told News 12 that the shortages do not put patients at risk, but they increase the cost of care.
