A Greenwich woman will compete in the world championships of her sport this weekend with the hope of later going for a medal at Rio.

Amy Dixon's journey to becoming a high-caliber athlete hasn't always been easy. When Dixon was 22, a rare auto-immune disease began attacking her eyes.

She says she took high doses of steroids and has had 19 surgeries to try and slow the disease, but it left her blind.

After the steroids, she gained weight and the former high school swimmer began swimming again. Shortly after that, she added biking to her workout routines. She then added running to her routine as well. Someone at Dixon's YMCA suggested she try a triathlon.

Dixon has a guide that is tethered to her during the swim. During the biking, Dixon and her guide ride a tandem bike, where Dixon's guide can control steering, braking and switching gears. For the final leg of the race, Dixon and her guide run tethered together. 

Dixon says she believes saying yes to everything has brought her opportunities. She also says she knows she doesn't need to have sight to have a vision.

"If the mind can conceive it, the body can achieve it," she says.

Dixon has her sights set on making the United States Paralympic triathlon team. Within the next few weeks, she will find out if she is heading to Rio.
