Back-to-school event in Stamford gives kids free clothing, supplies

An event in Stamford Sunday provided new clothes and school supplies to kids who might not have otherwise had them.
The second annual Back-to-School shop gave economically disadvantaged kids the opportunity to shop for new items for the start of the school year, something organizers say many of them have never done before.
They say more than 240 kids and 150 volunteers took part in the event at Davenport Ridge Elementary School.
Each child was assigned to a shopper who helped them shop for shoes, jackets, pants and other types of clothing free of charge.
The event was started by two Stamford women who saw the program in New Jersey and wanted to bring it to Stamford.
They say more than 50 percent of the children in Stamford public schools are economically disadvantaged.
